What store should come to Hammond Square?

The new owners of Hammond Square Mall would like some public participation on the future redevelopment of the shopping center and adjacent property.

If residents could choose just one retailer to come to the mall what would it be?

Hammond is a college town, so any stores that appeal to college students like Old Navy, American Eagle or Victoria's Secret would be a great improvement to the current mall's condition. By focusing on college students as consumers, the mall would become a big draw for current and future SLU students.

I think that the mall is in great need of a book store. It would be nice to have one on this side of town instead of having to drive across town through all the traffic.

Hammond needs restaurants... restaurants... restaurants... and lots of them....

An Olive Garden would be nice...
An Outback would be nice...

Anonymous said...

I think JcPenney needs to make a return to Hammond Square.. It definitely needs more children's clothing stores - like Children's Place-Limited too...

A glamour shots studio would be nice also.

Some ice-cream shops would be nice and some new restaurants in the surrounding area of the mall.

Hammond really sucks as far as shopping and places to eat.

I work in the mall, so I know what people are looking for. Stores such as Old Navy, Gap, Victoria's Secret are just a few that consumers are looking for. I could go on and on. It would also be great if JC Pennys would come back to Hammond. As for as restaurants, Out Back, Ruby Tuesday's, and Olive Garden would be a great start!

I would be interested in some stores that cater to adult--not teenaged women--like Ann Taylor or Ann Taylor Loft. I would also enjoy having a large discount store like TJ Maxx or Steinmart in Hammond.

Also, stores that carry fashion forward fashion for children like GAP Kids, Limited, Too, or J Crew Kids would be nice.

Gosh, anything would beat what we have now!

Kohl's Department Store(based in WI, I think). There is one in the Flowood area of Jackson, Ms. and another in Beaumont, Tx. - no others in the whole Gulf area.

Anonymous said...

I think a food court would be nice, though i don't know if it's feasible.

Anonymous said...

I think Hot Topic would be a nice store to have. Either that or a store that sells Japanese Animation or Japanese comics, like Suncoast. It would also be nice for BDalton's to make a return.

I really wish the mall would have a children's store, a book store, c.c.'s coffee, or an Old Navy. The shopping in Hammond could really be better! I am tired of havin gto drive to Baton Rouge, New Orleans or Covington to go shoppig!

Gap, Old Navy, Anne Taylor Loft, and 9 West would be fabulous!

Over and over I read and hear from everyone,"There's nowhere to shop in Hammond". It's always been hard for me to understand why Hammond is only considered good enough to be called a "Walmart town". The only reason that there are so many people crowding to Walmart is that Walmart is the only place available to Hammond and the surrounding areas to shop. Go to Walmart on any Saturday,or gasp, around a holiday and you will not believe that we are living in such a small town anymore. This small town with alot of people in it is demanding change to accomodate its needs. It's nice to finally see that businesses are finally taking notice of what the people want and need. Why should they go all the way to New Orleans,Baton Rouge, and Mandeville to shop? They could use that gas money and put it into what could be here locally.
Since hurricane Katrina hit, thousands of people have discovered Tangipahoa parish and have found out that it is above sea level here so that means much less of a chance of a storm surge to damage this area. So where are the businesses? We need you. We welcome you.
All that said,I think Marshalls would be a good store to locate here. It has
the best of everything for everyone. Designer clothing, shoes, bedding, and household items for discount prices. Old navy would also be another good store.

I would love to have Old Navy and/or a Gap store in the mall. There is much potential at the mall and I think bringing in the age group that shops at these stores would be an asset. We could also use another eating establishment for those who dont care for Mexican food.

Anonymous said...

Coldwater Creek, Chico's, and Talbot's - Hammond desperately needs clothing stores for those ladies over 40!!

Anonymous said...

For Adult Women: Ann Taylor/Ann Taylor Loft

For Adult Men: Sears is good; maybe a larger sports store; also Tiger Mania comes to mind

For Teens (and young adults): Old Navy/Gap

For Kids: Gap Kids/Limited Too

For Home: Bed Bath & Beyond/Linens N Things

For Food: offer more than chicken and Mexican...maybe pasta, pizza, hamburgers inside the mall; and popular restuarants outside the mall (Macaroni Grill is awesome)

Additional stores and more choices for food would improve the mall enormously.

Anonymous said...

STEINMART, PLEASE!!

Anonymous said...

Hot Topic.

Anonymous said...

We definitely need clothing stores such as American Eagle or Old Navy! We could even use a Bed Bath and Beyond or a Pier 1 Imports. As far as restaurants, Olive Garden would be fantastic!

Anonymous said...

In a college town, we need American Eagle, Old Navy, Gap.
For dorm stuff, we need Pier One and Bed, Bath, and Beyond.
For food: Macaroni Grill, Olive Garden.

Anonymous said...

They should build a Old Navy. Also they should consider buliding another Wal-mart or preferably a Target to take some of the pressure and congestion of Wal-mart. That place is ridiculous.
Any franchised store opening in the mall would be much improved. That is such a sorry excuse for a "mall"

Anonymous said...

There is no variety shopping at the mall that we have now. I think a Tiger Mania or Lions store would be ideal. I think JC Penneys will do well if they return. We need more shoe stores other than the ones that are there now. As far as food, I think a Copelands or some type of seafood restaurant.

Anonymous said...

For large dept. stores, we need Mervyn's, J.C. Penney, Foley's, and/or Macy's.

Anonymous said...

Old Navy, Bed Bath and Beyond, Olive Garden, Victoria's Secret, Steve & Barry's, TJMaxx, Starbucks

Anonymous said...

We need an Aeropostale.

Anonymous said...

we need another dept. store like Foley's, or McCray's, or a comeback for JC Penny's. Something that will offer items for all ages. A better food court is needed! In the hot summer, taking the kids to the mall is nice, we can eat and shop if there is more available. Also, why is a furniture store talking up a huge section of the mall? That space is needed for clothing stores or food places.

Anonymous said...

No more Discount Stores Please! We are only a "Walmart Town" because it's all we have. We need Banana Republic, GAP ,Old Navy ,American Eagle and Victoria Secrets.

Anonymous said...

We need a Cafe' Du Monde!

Anonymous said...

Pottery Barn ,Outback Steakhouse, Cafe' Du Monde and Banana Republic

Anonymous said...

I think a Express for Men would be great.

Get the furniture store and the HIP HOP stores out of the mall! PLEASE!!!!

Anonymous said...

1st choice---Whole Foods
2nd choice---Belks

I know that the department stores cater to mostly women and children , but how about a Cabellas or a store like Big Buck Sports that caters to the outdoorsman? It would be a whole lot easier for my wife to get me to join her in the mall if there was a store that I could buy my hunting and fishing gear in. If you don't think we need one, just go to Wal-Mart during hunting season and try to buy some clothes. If you're a hunter, you know what I'm talking about. Please don't leave the men out, we need help too!

We would enjoy TARGET. We just moved here & would enjoy better shopping.

Anonymous said...

I really prefer Bed Bath & Beyond. I'd rather my sales tax $$$$$ stay in Tangipohoa parish than St. Tammany.

Anonymous said...

Please add Ann Taylor Loft to the mall.....and expand the food court. The mall is very dark!

Anonymous said...

Definitely need TJ Maxx in Hammond, Stein Mart, too.

Alissa said...

I wish there was a way to take all of the good stores mentioned here, and create one big outlet store for the brand names listed. If the mall could do that - there's your winner.

Anonymous said...

Definitely a grocery store. The mall sort of splits Hammond and Ponchatoula and that would be convenient. Also we need either a Zea's, Outback or a Macaroni Grill restaurant. There are enough Mexican and Chinese restaurants in the area already.

Anonymous said...

Banana Republic, Old Navy, Ann Taylor Loft, Victoria Secret & Bed, Bath & Beyond would be perfect additions to shopping in Hammond. I also agree that there should be at least one great restaurant like Bennigans. Just like Chili's and Applebees, they will stay packed with business.

As a plus sized woman with many plus sized friends and family members, Hammond is missing a major store- Lane Bryant. I cannot tell you the thousands of dollars being spent in Covington or Baton Rouge because there is only one specialty store in Hammond and that one isn't exclusive either. Also Fashion Bug or Catherines. An Old Navy that carries its plus line in store would be awesome. Plus sized women are apart of this society that is very overlooked but there are many of us who enjoy good fashion!

Anonymous said...

As a teenager I believe in always looking my best, whether at school, at work, or just hanging out with friends. I also feel that the present Hammond mall does not fit my needs. Stylish stores like American Eagle, Hollister Co., Abercrombie & Fitch, Ann Taylor Loft, Gap, and Old Navy would all be great additions to our community. With gas prices so high these days, it's hard to find extra money to buy clothes and when teenagers do earn enough money they have to drive all the way to Slidell or Baton Rouge just to do some decent shopping. If Hammond's mall had more popular stores a lot of teenagers would shop there, and boy do teenagers do some shopping. A lot of the taxes could be going towards the schools in our parish but instead are going to schools in St. Tammany and Baton Rouge Parishes. A new and better mall is definitely needed in Hammond. Some new restaurants wouldn't hurt either. Maybe a Cafe Du Monde and/or Copeland's or Outback. Something good so we can work up our appetite by shopping and then dine at one of these fine restaurants.

I agree with most of the comments, as a grandmother I think we need a "baby R us store. Its difficult to find good baby clothes or baby furniture in the Hammond area. Maybe someone can also convince a store such as "Mommy and Me" to join the fast growing Hammond area. Then we wouldn't have to go to Covington or Baton Rouge to shop for our grandkids. Thanks

Anonymous said...

My first choice would definitely be a Whole Foods store. Then it would be to get J. C. Penneys back! The population would surely support both of these stores.

our family shops outside of hammond the majority of the time and would shop right here at home if we could get an abercrombie & fitch, american eagle, limited too, areopostle, old navy, and victoria secrets is a must.we also need a food court in our mall. The resturants we would love to see come to our area are olive garden, semolinas or macaroni grill.

Anonymous said...

It would be really great to have a LaMadaline's Restaurant in or around the mall. I also think that we should have stores such as Abercrombi, Hollister, American Eagle, Journeys, Kirklands, Pac Sun, and Limited TOO. These stores would definately attract the public. Our mall could use another department store too. It would be nice to have a Mervins or a new JC Penny.

Anonymous said...

I think we are in great need of an Old Navy...Everyone loves Old Navy!

Anonymous said...

Bring on Borders Books!

Anonymous said...

MAC Makeup, Charlotte Rouse, American Eagle, Express (men's and women's), BeBe, Steve Madden's, Victoria's Secret, Buckle... Specialty stores is what the old mall was lacking... People will still drive to Baton Rouge unless there are more stores. Department stores don't cut it.

Anonymous said...

I believe what this community needs most is a Target.

We need another option to Wal-Mart's monopoly on general merchandise. I dread going to Wal-Mart and go out of my way to shop elsewhere when possible.

For the mall it would be nice to see some nice clothing stores, and some stores for teenagers and college students, such as American Eagle, Old Navy, etc.

I'd love to eventually see a CompUSA, Best Buy or Circuit City, but that's unlikley now that Best Buy opened in Covington.

As an avid shopper and sociable person, this issue has crossed my mind and has been a tired and true gossip topic of Hammond. Was the painting of the mall supposed to bring more shoppers? Does the title 'Village of Hammond Square' end the revamping?
Old Navy would suit the college students budget, as well as the average Hammond household income. It would be huge. A Barnes and Noble would be ideal for a study area/great retailer.
American Eagle, Victoria's Secret, Forever 21, Hollister & Abercrombie for the younger crowd. Ann Taylor/Banana/Gap for the older. As far as eating/drinking: A REAL starbucks or CC's, Jason's Deli, Olive Garden, Ruby Tuesdays, Macaroni Grille would be great!

Hope this helps..
And I hope to one day see some of these develop into actual plans instead of endless gossip! :)

Anonymous said...

we need a good novelty store, and a poncho's mexican restaurant, and an internet cafe/bookstore

Victoria´s Secret

No questions asked.

Alissa said...

Okay - dare I say it? Alright, but just this once :-). Something we have been lacking for a while has been a good "gag gift store". Now no - don't get my mind wrong and toss it in a gutter!

I mean, a really good gag gift selecion. A selection not just a row or two in a retailshop, and not out in the open "something sexual". If it had to be something sexual for sale, please keep it behind closed doors if you may? I STILL love taking my daughters to decent stores in the mall. Claire's Boutique. Please, never, EVER get rid of Claire's!

A true "gag gift store" would not take up so much space as a depratment store. And I've seen more than just one "abandon" outlet inside HSM. Surely, something can get be worked out in the near future, yes?

Can't wait to see the results!

Anonymous said...

I think there should be an Old Navy or American Eagle or Aeropostale...the closest store is covington!! and all the highschool/college crowd shops at those stores and since Hammond is a college-based town, do for us!!!
but there also should be a REAL coffee shop!!! like a CC's or Starbucks!

Anonymous said...

I think that the Mall needs American Eagle, Abercrombie and Fitch, Aeropostale, Old Navy, and Victoria Secrets. The Mall is really old and outdated and I think that we need new stores. I also think we need a better food court. Gas is expensive and to go to Covington or Baton Rouge, it gets really expensive.

It seems that developers over the years have underestimated the Hammond area and Hammond Square Mall. I have just read over and over the same stores that people want American Eagle, abercrombie and fitch, gap, old navy victoria's secret, ann taylor, pier one. Instead they all want to go to covington and mandeville and build big box retailers like Best Buy, Petsmart, Academy Sports, Shoe Carnival, etc, and department stores like JCpenney move there when just a few miles away in either Slidell or across the lake in Metairie they have the exact same stores! How many JCpenneys need to be so close together. Hammond Square has the excellent location of the intersection of I-55 and I-12. It is almost smack dab in the middle of Baton Rouge and New Orleans. And there is a major four year university in the city! Why developers have been passing up Hammond for a cluster of the same stores and restaurants within a 20-30 mile radius on the north and south shores of lake ponchartrain makes no sense. It sounds like people would be enthusiastic about a real shopping destination in Hammond. A city much more centrally located in the region than Covington. So build it, people will come. I have some more store suggestions not mentioned: rue 21, bring back kb toys, buckle, hollister co, spencer gifts, sam goody and belk dept store in the mall. A power center with ross dress for less, dress barn, circuit city or best buy, barnes and noble(I mean come on there is a univeristy in town!), petsmart or petco, bed bath and beyond or linens things, and a Target. Restaurants: definitely Copelands, Red Lobster, Olive Garden and La Madeline.

Anonymous said...

I think that Kolh's would be a great addition to the Hammond area. I have shopped at Kohls in several different states. It is a great store with great sales. Our community could benefit from such a store as Kohl's

Anonymous said...

TARGET! NO DOUBT ABOUT IT. OLIVE GARDEN WOULD BE GREAT AND I AGREE ABOUT A FURNITURE STORE TAKING UP MOST OF THE MALL, BUT REMMEBER THOSE WERE ALL STORES AT ONE TIME THAT CLOSED. PEOPLE HAVE BEEN DRIVING TO BATON ROUGE AND NEW ORLEANS FOR YEARS TO SHOP, OUR NEWEST COMPETITOR IS COVINGTON/MANDEVILLE. THE PEOPLE ARE HERE, WE JUST NEED GOOD CHAIN STORE TO GET MAKE US VISIT THE FIESTA OF A MALL. AND WHY HTE PLASTIC CHAIRS THAT LOOK LIKE THEY ARE FROM A FLINSTONES SET?

Anonymous said...

I think that we should have a OldNavy, Gap, Victoria's Secret, Coffee shops like C C's. and a Target. I think that Hammond should have had these things a long time ago, and we also need our JC Penny's back. I have to plan to make a day out of a shopping trip just to not waste gas. It makes no sense to go all the way to baton rouge or mandeville to get to the stores i like and not spend all day there.

Anonymous said...

The only reason I go to Hammond Square Mall is to eat at the Chick-fil-A. (I love it) I would like to see it outside the mall, like the new one they are building in Covington by the Target. As for inside the mall we have nothing but the rinky dink stores that sells cheap junk its almost as if the same person owns all those shops! We really need them to go! Bring on good stores that sell quality products. We need clothes stores for Women,Men and children. Toys stores the one now it a total joke. Victoria Secret!! All women know its the only place to buy quality undergarments. Book stores, American Cookie, and most of all restaurants PLEASE!! Heres a new one Copelands Cheesecake Bistro.

HOT TOPIC! Please! It sucks having to go all the way out to Baton Rouge and New Orleans for it

Anonymous said...

Even though I'm banned from there right now, Hammond NEEDS a Hot Topic because like the other comment said, it sucks having to go to Baton Rouge or New Orleans for it. Also, it desperately needs a book store of some sort, like a B. Dalton.

I also think it needs a PacSun, an arcade (why exactly was it shut down?), Steve and Barry's with a big Southeastern Lions section, Lane Bryant, American Eagle, Old Navy (just because it seems so popular with everyone else), Victoria's Secret, and a better food court (especially a coffee shop with free wireless internet). And whatever happened to that little cafeteria thing? Why not put a Olive Garden or something there? (Considering we have no Olive Garden in Hammond as well). *No offense, but where the heck are you going to put a Target in there??*

And I don't care if they just re-painted everything... RE-re-paint it, because it looks God-awful the way it is now. AND add more lighting, because it's scary dim in there.

Anonymous said...

What about a TGI Fridays or some type of BBQue place. I think a Mikasa store for gifts. Another nail salon is definitely need there. Ly Ly nails is way to busy. We could spend our tax dollars in our own parish rather than East Baton Rouge or St. Tammany.

HOT TOPIC!!!!!

Anonymous said...

Hot Topic. Simple, it's hell when you have to go all the way to Cortana to shop at such a small store --- and I know a hell of a lot of people who'd appreciate one. But it also needs more food places :] Food is always nice! lol If American Eagle comes to Hammond....

......
........
............

haha.

Anonymous said...

Alright, hammond definately needs a Hot Topic. It has many other stores or close subsitutes, but there is nothing like a Hot Topic there. For A. Eagle and the sort we have a Goodies in hammond already. As far as food goes, there's food everywhere. We have some coffee shops in hammond already too. There's also a Books a Million in hammond... and as far as target goes, settle for Wal Mart. Let's face it, there's a substitute for every store except for Hot Topic (and an actual good arcade, we got one, it's just tiny) And maybe a Spencers would do good. But a lot of what everyone has said really wouldnt fit in the mall. You are not gonna get a target in that place, among other stores...

Anonymous said...

Anything would be an improvement on what we have now. Personally i would love an old navy, some great resturaunts, and maybe a linen store such as linens and things. Also some discount stores such as steinmart. What we really need though is a victorias secret!!

Anonymous said...

we would LIKE to see JCPENNEY's, OLD NAVY, VICTORIA SECRETS A MORE EXPANED FOOD COURT (EX. CARMEL CORN. ANYTHING NEW WOULD BE EXCITING. THANKS

Anonymous said...

First thing is first, the reason JC Pennies left the mall was because no one was shopping the mall. Same reason so many other stores have left......And the reason people stopped shopping the mall is because the owners allowed it to become a nasty environment and they raised the rents on the establishments. What business would want to stay in a location that did not bring in the customers? Stores alone are not enough, the mall needs a major overhaul. The painting on the outside is nice but NOT enough, the new carpet around the center court is a major improvement but there again, NOT enough. The wood staircases are great but they need to be striped and redone. The lighting needs major improvements, no more dark scary corners. Do something with the corridor to the restrooms...even in the hayday of the Hammond mall that was a scary place to go. The mall is old and smelly...get some ionizers.
Without major renovations to the skeleton of the mall the new stores might come but they won't stay.
Revamp, overhaul and then they will come!!!!
Heck, I'd even drive from Mandeville to shop there........but not if I feel like I have to wash my hands and take a bath as soon as I leave.
Clean it up! Please don't just paint over the yuck!

Old Navy, GAP, American Eagle, Target, Aeropostale, Victoria's Secret and a World Market would be nice. With the price of gas - not having to drive 60 miles to Baton Rouge, Covington, Slidell or Kenner would be welcomed! I even drive to Jackson, MS to be able to have a choice (besides Wal-Mart). I avoid Hammond at all cost!

i went to school at slu and decided to stay here after graduation. but, while in college, and even now, driving 30 min. either way down I-12 is not efficient when i'm looking for something nice to wear to an evening out with my husband. i like lerner's and limited, but that's all we have! what about ann taylor, gap and old navy. Target, bed bath and beyond and kirklands are great too. (definitely target!!) as far as restaurants--copelands for sure, outback, maybe a melting pot (awesome fondue restaurant in baton rouge). Hopefully the people who are investing in this 'turn-around' will see the need for these places. before the storm we were needing/wanting. But, now that we've seen this tremendous boom to hammond/tangipahoa parish, we can only hope that the investors give us what we need and want instead of pulling our legs. Hammond is the new place to live! Come on---give us what we need!

I would love to have J.C.Penney's back.

I agree... blow the place up!! The place has so much potential but has turned into an outdated dump... thankfully we have new owners (Sterling Properties??) that are coming out with new plans in September!!

This is a COLLEGE town and should conduct itself as such. Hammond needs to add things that appeal to students who plan on living on campus. Maybe like a Linens and Things or Bed Bath & Beyond. There also needs to be a place where people can go to buy clothes other than Sears and the local Walmart. Oh and I realize that Dillard's used to own the land that the mall is on, but is that store really necessary? I mean the majority of the people who live in Hammond are either on the poverty level or who are very close to being that way; who can really afford the high prices that Dillard's offers? Oh and while I'm on the notion of catering to college kids...where is the STARBUCKS?!?!?! These PJ's places are a serious joke and the idea that they're popping up around town needs to be squashed. I have to agree with the other people though who said that an Old Navy should be added. I think that creating a college town atmosphere would benefit both the college as well as businesses who chose to come into town.

JC Penney which has a large variety of clothing for men, women, and children in one department store.

Old Navy would be nice; along with American Eagle, Express, Victoria's Secret, Gap, Hollister, A & F, Target, Pier 1, Kirkland's, Wet Seal, Disney Store, etc...oh yeah...and a food court would be great!!!

I agree with the earlier post about more STYLISH plus size apparel and not the maw maw stuff like Lane Bryant or Ashley Stewart. The Rainbow didn't do well here because of the lack of plus sizes. My family is the "Old Navy Spokesfamily"...... we live in there. If it wasn't so far I would really be broke. And a bigger food court with different genres of food like chinese, cheese steaks, and popeye's and a daquiri shop to ease our mind after dealing with the "Mommy I want that!!!!!" from our screaming kids.

Stop, already! Take a look at your comments. You want mostly the same stores and eating places but what is real important is to look at the "needs" and not the "wants".
I know Stirling will give us something very, very, nice as they have done with all the other Malls they manage or own.
Let's take a look at our Wal-Mart. Did you know our Hammond Wal-Mart is second in the Nation in sales? Why? They have no one to compete with. You can say they are the only game in town where we can buy groceries, clothes, and household good and etc. at a reasonable price. When you go in Wal-Mart you see someone you know, you see they have the items you want, be it towel or shoes or material for sewing. Where else can you do this in this area? If Stirling can give us something like this on the east side of town, this would be great!
Look at what Covington is getting in their new mall; a Wal-Mart on one end and a Sam’s on the other end, cooperating these into the mall to give a newer look.
Then we can get the smaller stores, the chains, and the restaurants. And even a smaller grocery store.
But our need on this side of town is a large grocery store. Let’s look at the stores we go to Covington to shop and let’s bring them to Hammond to keep our dollars here.
It is so close to travel to Covington if you live in the east side of town and shop. You can be there in 20 minutes or less. We need to stop the flow to St. Tammy and let the “buck” stop here.

O.k...this is my first entry, I just believe that if we keep priding Tangipahoa on nasty lingere/novelty stores, dollar stores, hip hop fashion, and chineese junk thrift marts on every corner, that our economy will never improve. Also, we must think....if these stores that I just named, plus the furniture store all return to the mall, what crowd will we draw??? I will tell you...a TRASHY crowd. We have banks popping up on every corner of our parish... we must have money, right? So if the stores chosen for us continue to be below average, we will never know how great our Hammond could be. I know this blog entry will not directly effect which stores are chosen. I just believe we are better than what we have been degraded to for so long.

Ruby Tuesday has been advertising in this area for the last couple of months - Are they coming to Hammond? We need an affordable, family friendly restaurant. Does anyone agree? Thanks...

Bath & Body Works along with Victoria's Secret will do well in Hammond. Perhaps we could even support Express?

Kohl's, Belk, Ann Taylor, Olive Garden, American Eagle, Limited, Macy's, Mervyn's, Kirklands, Gap, Victoria's Secret,Talbot. Just look at malls that are successful like the Mall of Louisiana or Esplanade. Hammond needs stores for everyone. Express for men and women would be good.
