Britney Spears fights fire with fire

How do you get a celebrity-hungry public to stop caring about you? For Britney Spears, the best way is to pose nude in a national fashion magazine.

Since Spears’ June 15 interview with Matt Lauer on NBC’s “Dateline,” columnists around the world have weighed in on Spears’ finer points. There was her straw-like hair, her malfunctioning fake eyelash, her see-through maternity top and her horrid denim miniskirt. It’s easy to make fun of her; that’s been established.

It’s been reported that neither of Spears’ publicists (or stylists) were present before or during the interview, and we saw the results. The Kentwood native called herself “country” in what might be construed as an insult to this area.

Being “country” doesn’t give someone a pass to endanger his or her baby by ignoring child safety seat laws. But even if she doesn’t adhere to that reasoning, she’s got to realize that traveling on a rural road in Kentwood is worlds different than zooming around on a Los Angeles freeway.

She’s under a lot of scrutiny, and she’s right — any normal person probably wouldn’t have had to deal with a negative public backlash over supposed baby blunders. But then again, normal people don’t have nude spreads in magazines.

According to a poll conducted by US Weekly, 87 percent of respondents said they had actually lost respect for Spears since her much-hyped interview.

So Spears apparently went into image makeoverdrive. The cover of Harper’s Bazaar shows a black-haired, airbrushed and beaming Spears wearing nothing but an exquisite jeweled necklace. The images are a far cry from the interview, which saw Spears breaking down in tears and begging to be left alone.

But poor Britney is pleading into deaf ears. As long as gossip magazines continue to thrive on pictures and rumors, the paparazzi will never leave her alone. There’s simply too much money to be made.

And now, with the nude photos and another set of pictures she sold to OK! magazine, Spears is fueling the very fire that consumes her. If she wants to be out of magazines, why on earth would she consent to appear in them?

It was the same situation after her 2004 marriage to wannabe-rapper Kevin Federline. She wanted to be left alone, but somehow found it within herself to air “Chaotic,” a reality show mostly composed of Spears walking around with a camcorder during the early weeks of her canceled Onyx Hotel Tour.

There’s got to be a point where Spears just throws up her hands in this battle. Rumors and lies, if that’s what they are, will catch up to those who spread them. The American public, as celebrity-crazed as it is, isn’t stupid.

Spears apparently just gave up her faith in Kabbalah, but I think a belief in karma would suit her better.

In her attempt at damage-control, Spears is only damaging herself more. Forget image, forget record sales, forget celebrity ... if leading a low-key life is what will make her happy, then she should go for it and never look back.

Or maybe her all-encompassing celebrity status will keep her from achieving that.

Either way, Spears needs to start dousing her life’s flames. Inviting more media attention isn’t the way to do it.

When we put more interest in a "movie star" then we do in our family and our own lifes, we are going to far.
Who cares what these "stars" do?
Let's pick up a book to give us knowledge of important things in our lives, not others lives.
Parents, read about your childrens schools, about your hospitals, your doctors.
Young people, learn, learn, learn. Knowledge today means you will have a much better income in life.
Let's read something that would make our lives better.
In other words, lets put that time it takes to read about "star" and read something to better ourselves.

Hello Anonymous - I agree with you, with a few exceptions. No one in the public has created Britney, forced her to strip, and forced her to make a reality show of her newlywed sex life. This was her OWN doing, and nothing more.

Now your next comment will be, "Just change the channel", right? Right. Have you watched television lately Anon? If so, take note of the countless commercials, talk shows, and videos that have taken Britney and 'little girl sex appeal' far beyond any limit that a young child should see. This is on ever channel. We have gotten to the point where changing the channel does no good. Turning the television off completely just might help though. What do you think?

And to answer your question - I DO care what young stars plastered on every commercial and television reality show and the influence they give me daughters who have watched their share of television and VH1. If anything, I tell them as intelligently as possible, Britney (along with countless other celebs) are NOT an example to be. Sure, they have money, but is all the money in the world worth losing their self respect (a la Britney?). No, no, hell no. When stars are bringing home $12,000 gift bags from a wedding or movie premier, I have to laugh and tell my children why. So many celebrities want you to save to the world, donate your money, donate all you have to save the starving of Somalia - and good for them! But do you see these same celebrities giving up $12,000 of jewelry, cell phones and perfumes and turn them to cash on the black market to save the starving refuges of Somolia?

Nop, Uh uh. Don't think so. Whatever it takes to keep a celebrity on screen is what they do - and lately the two that are being used are 1) eating disorders, and 2) give to the poor of Africa. And after all of the pleas to save the dying people of Katrina, Somalia, Sril Lanka, etc., they go back home to their comfy bed or deeeee-lux apartment in the skyyyyyy, and forget all about it. Now it's OUR job to save the world.

I personally go for the pooorest woman who gave 1 pence, all she had to the needy. Christ said she gave more than anyone else that day - despite the rich of the area praying out loud so eeeeeveryone can see thier pittance of an offering while they still have loads of cash to spare. That scripture reminds me far too much of Hollywood today. Hmmmmm. Food for though.

Do I LOVE to see celebrity private lives? No. Do I want to bring my chhildren up with a decent heart and concience? Your dam right I do. And therein lies the difference.

Finaly thoughts: Celebrities have one thought in mind when it comes to the hollywood business - an ulterior motive, Trust me.

Good post! Sure was nice to vent about this whole celebrity game so many are sucked into :-(.

First off I'd like to agree with you on the subject of Britney and the fact that no one forces her to do the things she does, but I have to agree with the other poster in saying that you don't have to sit and watch it. Now onto other, more disagreeable things. You act like you have no control over what your kids watch or take in. To an extent you don't, but whose fault is it that they're watching "stars bringing home $12,000 gift bags from a wedding or movie premier". I mean I really don't see exactly what you're complaining about. It looks like a bunch of jibber jabber to me. If you have a problem with your kids watching things on tv, then remove the cable from your home. It's YOU that's exposing your kids to the things that you yourself are preaching against. I watch TV every single day and don't see any of the crud that you're talking about. Maybe I should pick up a copy of People magazine and read while I watch Entertainment Tonight, then maybe I could get a glimpse of what you're talking about. Now to end this rant...If you want your kids to not be exposed to such things, then you as a parent should do something about it. There are plenty of TV channels that do not show any of the things you mentioned, but when you let your kids watch things such as VH1 and the like, what do you really expect?

Hey anonymous!

Sorry it took so long to get back. You said here:

"You act like you have no control over what your kids watch or take in. To an extent you don't, but whose fault is it that they're watching "stars bringing home $12,000 gift bags from a wedding or movie premier". I mean I really don't see exactly what you're complaining about."

My response - Of course I have control over what my kids watch. I'm the parent. That's my job. I think you misunderstood. It's also my job to reiterate to my children that what they see as Hollywood is not "art imitating life". There is nothing about Hollywood today I would ever want my children to idolize. I love them too much.

As far the $12,000 gift bags, that was my own 12 year old daughters question to me. In other words, how can celebrities talk all the time about how they want to save the world and the starving and the poor, but actually feel good about accepting $12,000 gift bags that the cost alone could feed a small city in Somalia? It's a double standard. I think I made that point clear.

And finally, in case my response still doesn't make sense to you :-), I have more respect for the "anonymous" person (maybe like yourself?) who gives to a charity or does a good deed for the sake of harmony and love, as opposed to the celebrity who comes out of the woodwork showing up at charity events all the while promoting their new movie or cd.

I hope that made more sense to you this time. take care!

BRITNEY IS A GROWN ASS WOMAN AND SHES RICH. PEOPLE JUST NEED TO GET A LIFE I DONT UNDERSTAND THEY MAKING BRITNEY VERY POPULAR EVERYDAY WITH ALL THE GOSSIP AND HER BEING ON TV, MAGAZINES AND I HOPE SHE BECOMES MORE POPULAR UNTIL SHE BECOMES AN ICON. BECAUSE THEY NEED TO NOT GIVE HER SO MUCH ATTENTION AND IT WILL BE VICE VERSA.

I THINK BRITTNEY IS GROWN AND DOES PUT HER SELF IN HER OWN SCURTINY, BUT SHE IS FROM LOUISIANA AND WE NEED TO BE BETTER FANS AND JUST LEAVE HER ALONE!!
