The Hammond Square Mall will be going through a major redevelopment beginning in April, and shoppers will be able to go to a completed "open air lifestyle center" beginning in 2008. New stores inclue Target, Outback Steakhouse, The Home Depot and the return of J.C. Penney.
Developers are looking for a new name for the area. Here's where you can post your suggestions.

I have a name suggestion for the new and improved Hammond Square Mall. "Hammond Aire Shopping Center".

I have a name suggestion for the new Hammond Square Mall. If the magnificent Oak Trees are to remain at the entrance, then I suggest the appropriate name should be: "Hammond Oaks Shopping Center"
I also think that an Oak Tree or Oak Leaf emblem would be appropriate in the title.

My first thought was "Hammond Centre", but the oaks idea is great. What about "Hammond Oaks" or "Hammond Oak Centre"? I definitely think "Hammond" should be in the name. But I think "shopping" or "shopping center" should be left out if this is to be more of a lifestyle center.
Another idea: something including the word "junction", signifying a place where things or people come together. Hammond Junction, Hammond Oaks Junction, . . .
Melissa
I hope the oak trees will remain, it would not be right if they were removed. I like the idea of "Hammond Oaks" or "Hammond Oaks Center". I also like the oak emblem idea.

My suggestion is "Cloverleaf Shopping Centre" based on the interstate design that connects our community with I-12 and I-55.
i also Vote for "Hammond Oak Centre" and the oak leaf would be a great symbol!!!! i think hammond should stay in the title!!
junebug said;
I agree that the name should include "Oak" and use either the Oak tree image or an oak leaf logo. Let's name the center "The Hamlet of Squire Oak" to draw attention to and in honor of the magestic Oak tree. Also, to show that the entire complex is a type of community within itself.
The oak leaf logo is an interesting idea, but I doubt that North Oaks Medical Center would be willing to part with it.
To me, this whole name-the-mall idea is a no-brainer. Simply omit the word "mall" and call it Hammond Square! The word "square,"
after all, calls to mind an open-air town square. Besides, everyone already calls it Hammond Square. Why not take advantage of the built-in name recognition?
The name would be "Hammond Air"..I also hope the new shopping area will have clothing stores such Old Navy, TJ MAXX, Marshall's, Stein Mart and Lane Bryant. There are enough home shopping stores...Please more clothing stores. I spend all of my money in Mandeville or Baton Rouge.
Hammon Square is a wonderful name. There sholud be stores like TJ MAXX, Lane Bryant, Stein Mart, Old Navy and Marshall's. No more home improvement stores.
i love that outback steakhouse will be in hammond. i think the name should have something in it to reflect on the university also. i also think there should be stores in there like American Eagle, Aeropastle, and Victorias Secret. these are the stores that most "teen and early 20's" look for. they would do great here with all the college kids around. we would not have to keep driving to baton rouge to shop.
The perfect name for the new mall since Hammond is the "crossroads" between New Orleans and Baton Rouge, should be properly named
*** The CrossRoads*** or what about *** The CrossRoads Plaza
Thanks,

I think the name should be Hammond Oaks Square because of the beautiful Oak trees.
STERLING SQUARE AT HAMMOND

FLORIDA PARISHES SUPER CENTRE
I am really happy about the Outback
Steakhouse. Hammond needs more restaurants. I, too, would love to see more clothing stores: Lane Bryant, Marshalls, TJMaxx, and othrs.
this would be a great name for the mall (The Garden) or the (Hammond Garden) or maybe (The Hammond Garden Aire Mall.
ok so i think the Hammond Garden Aire Mall or the Garden sounds good thanks, C.Sebastain chester 1309 west church st. hammond, la. 70401
here is a good suggestion for a new name for the mall,(The Tangi Aire Shopping Mall.
The Tangi Villa shopping Centre .would be a great name also.
The Tangi Oaks shopping Villa sounds good.
How 'bout:
Northshore Mall of Hammond
Or
Northshore Shopping Center
Good Luck!!
How about "Fraise Crossroads at Hammond" to celebrate strawberries. I also thought about using the French word for strawberries, carrefour, but the French retailer may object.

THE PALACE
"Outlets"
all of these are great suggestions and about the stores too but i like Southeastern Oaks! both from hammond mall and the university! it's better to have a collaboration than hammond centre or hammond oaks!thats boring! Southeatern Oaks sounds GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!you get the best of both worlds!

I agree with a lot of the posters that Hammond Oaks Plaza is a good name. Although I think it's silly to demolish the mall instead of remodeling it, I'm glad that Target, The Home Depot, and Old Navy are finally coming to Hammond so I don't have drive all the way to Covington, Slidell, Mandeville, and Baton Rouge. And I'm also happy that J.C. Penney is returning. Other businesses I would like to see come to Hammond are:
Borders
Waldenbooks
Barnes & Noble
Ross
Best Buy
Circuit City
Toys 'R' Us
Sav-A-Center
Staples
Academy Sports & Outdoors
I would also like to see these businesses return to Hammond:
B. Dalton
Shoney's
Also I hope that Coach House Gifts, Uniquely Wood, and the Sound Shop will be able to find new locations, because it would be a shame for them to go.

I think Stirling Oaks with the Oak Leaf emblem would be great!
name for Hammond Square:
"Grand Oak Plaza".
Ann Neal
19204 Neal Rd.
Loranger, LA 70446
Crossroad Oaks, Hammond Oaks, Tangi Oaks-Some kind of Oak symbol-a tree or an oak leaf (not anything Sterling. Glad they are redoing the area, though.)
Hope there will be a Ross and a Marshal's! Christopher & Banks! More places to eat! Gift shops that have Southeastern college gear!
My suggestion is Hammond Square, just drop the Mall part.
My suggestion for a name would be
"Country Oaks". We like the idea of the open air atmosphere, and we
all like the country setting.
I'd like to see Ruby Tuesday, the family friendly restaurant, next to the oak tree named "Imperial". Hammond Oaks & Stirling are breathing new life into not only the city but the region. Thanks & Good Luck!
I agree with all of the above ~ something with "Oaks" is perfect for this parish. I did get a giggle though, with a poster above who mentioned the hospital may not like the mall using "Oaks" in it's name - HEE! The hospital doesn't own the rights to "Oaks" of course, and it reminded me of movie maker Spike Lee when he tried to take "Spike T.V." to court for using HIS name. Whaaaaat? Hilarious how some ego's can be there, Spike :-).
North Oaks is an awesome hospital with probably the BEST maternity ward around. I really don't think there would be a dilemma in the name, so Hammond - PLEASE stick with a name people of the community will recognize, and what visitors will soon come to know - OAKS.

It sound great !! A new mall is what Hammond needs...however, "open air"... No thank you, you can have the heat, rain and cold, I'm used to driving to Baton Rouge and New Orleans and shopping in a temperature controlled environment so I guess I will keep on driving.
At one time Hammond had a magnificent
hotel (located where AmSouth Bank is
across from the post office). This hotel was the hub of Hammond. Its
name was Casa de Fresa (House of Berries). I think it would be great
to go back a little to Hammond's roots
and in conjunction with what this parish is really known for - strawberries - not Oak trees. Therefore, it would be great to take a little of Hammond's history and name the new mall - Hammond Casa de Fresa Plaza.
I also like the name Hammond Oaks or Maybe something with SLU involved in it. I think that the ideas of have an aeropostle would be great I shop there and so do many others I know, except we have to drive so far to shop. I also think maybe a Steve and Barry's would be good. They offer good clothing at great prices. Maybe a Disney store also. Old Navy, and many others, how about a Discovery store. Now that we have people from other city's here, they are used to shopping at a variety of these places, this would be good to incorporate places they had or have in the N.O. area. How about a Burke's or Burlington.
How about Tangi Centre? Has sort of a regional flavor. Somewhere in the plan, there has to be a CCs Coffee, and a Barnes and Noble!
Please use "Oak" in the name - I moved away over 25 years ago and the oak trees in Hammond and the surrounding area are just a part of the culture there.... (along with the Hi-Ho!!)
I think either "Imperial Oaks Mall" or "Mall of Imperial Oaks". Also, "Avenue of the Oaks"
How about an upscale name like "The Oaks at Arbor Center" This would allow for a more versatile shopping area with a main mall surrounded by support businesses like restaurants, coffee shops, banks, etc.
I don't like the idea of oaks or southeastern at all. Those names are taken, move on. There's already a shopping center in B.R. called Hammond Aire. Also, the name Tangi has been used to death. Why not keep it just simply Hammond Square. Everyone will call it that anyway. Besides -- the name just fits. It's perfect. And please...don't call it "Northshore" anything.
Don't change the name. People around here will keep calling it Hammond Square. Look how many people still call the hospital Seventh Ward.
I have a name suggestion for the new Hammond Mall. I think we should try to get people to come
back and
Shop At
H.O.M.E.
(Hammond Oaks Mall Expo)
I'm not sure of the "e" word-maybe their is a better suggestion.

I like the "Southeastern Oaks".
Other stores/restaurants I would like to see come would be:
Olive Garden
Chick-fil-A (freestanding with drive-thru)
Smokey Bones or TJ Ribs
Academy sports
Sam's club
Definitely a Kirklands!!
Best Buy
I hope the traffic situation between the Mall,I-12 and Club Deluxe gets fixed quickly. I HATE to use that exit because of the truckstops getting backed up.Sometimes it has taken 15 min. to get thru those 2 blocks. And the right lane south to Club Deluxe needs to be continued into a right turn lane onto Club Deluxe.
Looking forward to Home Depot and major shopping closer to home. Thanks!

I suggest "The Hammond AIRE Mall At Northshore"

Hammond Square is being reborn (hence Renaissance). What was once a dream is now becoming a reality thanks to Sterling Properties.

No matter what you call it...and a tragic lack of imagination has been exhibited thus far in the suggestions...it won't be long before the shiny new stores take on the poorly stocked, ignorantly staffed and filthy appearance of the other big names who have come into the area. Can you say "WalMart," "IHOP" or "Lowes?"
How about a porn warehouse and retail shop like the one just approved at the corner of West I-55 Service Road and Yellow Water Road? Until something is done to stop attrocities like this, a new mall is just putting pearls on a swine.
My suggestion for the new shopping center is Stirling Shopping villa or Stirling Business Villa.Hmm,or perhaps La Flora Square Shopping Villa.
This may be off subject but I thought I would speek what I know.
I cought wind that they're keeping the Sears but expanding it.I also heard of a few stores being negotiated which follow: Old Navy & Gap,Hollister,Abercrombie,Hot Topic, and American Eagle.Theres also negotiation for some restraunts which follow:Chick-Fil-A(trying to get a free standing building),Olive Garden,Red Lobster(which wouldnt equal up to the quality of local seafood in my opinion),La Madelline,Macaroni Grill, and Copelands. To finish up,there nagotiating with these three coffee shops:Starbuck's(which myte end up in target as usual),C.C.'s coffee, and Cafe Du Monde.
I'm not going to try to prove that I'm right about the above info but I know that my source is very reliable in the subject of development and I suggest you should check into those negotiating stores.

Hey Anonymous!
Since you made it the worlds business how much of an axe you have to grind with the area, may I make a suggestion to you? Please try to get out a little more, and discover the good things this area have to offer. There are MANY, and if you haven't seen them yet, you may be simply misguided, or have little experience with the area.
It is clear to me, and most likely anyone else who reads your post, that it's not the area and the stores that discourage you, but it's people in general, and the company you keep. Live a little, enjoy the area, life is too short to be so bitter. And if that still soesn't work for you, you can always move elsewhere. There is no law that says you HAVE to stay here. Unless you are a minor, which would thus explain your tone. Take care :-).
It should remain Hammond Square Mall. As with any other building in any state that gets restored, its people will always call it by what it once was. I still call the Landmark the Holiday Inn. Look how many years it was called that, just like the mall. Maybe a new image needs a new name, but I will always call it by what it has been for decades.
"THE OLD OAK CENTER"
Hey, Alissa:
Your response to anonymous of "Love it or leave it" regarding criticism of the current state of shopping in Hammond, is just another example of why the area's biggest export is critical thinkers.
Refute, if you can, the message, not the critic. Where are those well-stocked, knowledgably staffed and clean large retail stores?
Driven through the filthy parking lots lately? Told by the clerk, "We don't have that in stock. I don't know when it's coming in." Waited for something not in stock to be ordered?
Perhaps you should get out more often. But y'all come back soon now, ya' hear.
Hey Anon! I had to laugh out loud when I read your post :-). If the areas biggest export are critical thinkers, that must explain why you're still here, eh? Hehe!
The message is really simple. I guess you can "love it or leave it" if that's the way you want to put it. But my suggestion was in a different direction. If Anonymous is so miserable here in Hammond - just go. Why would anyone want to stay if they are truly miserable? But a quick heads up, in case you may not have noticed Anon ~ please don't think Hammond is the only place in the world that has dirty parking lots. They are everywhere. Your going to have a tough time finding anything that your pleased with, so I just thought I'd give you a heads up on the matter. In time when you've grown a little - you WILL find, I promise you, that those things you complained about are relatively minor in comparison to the big picture. Unless you choose to stay bitter, which is your choice. No one does this to you except for you, yourself. But you take care now - ya hear?
I think teh tried and true name of ammond Square is the best name for it. The Oak Plaza derivitives makes me think of a medical plaza, and I keep wondering how serious people are about the "aire" names, considering "Hammond Aire" is already taken.

It is reommended that the
first letter of each word
above should NOT be used
to form a new name for
the Hammond Mall, but rather
Hammond NETWORK Mall
The person who commented about the condition of the existing stores in Hammond and elsewhere in the parish is correct. The majority of the employees or rude, unconcerned and or not knowledgeable about their jobs. The parking lots and the stores (especially the restroom facilities) are filfty. The entire system has lost it's pride! I believe this is why you see so many businesses open and then shortly they close. Who wants to shop in such condtions?
I think the name should be Strawberry Oaks Mall. It identifies the beautiful fruit that is produced here and the tree s that are also there. I can't wait until its finished. Thanks
HAMMOND OAKS VILLA
I AM VERY EXCITED ABOUT ALL OF THE NEW STORES COMING TO HAMMOND. IT IS SO ANOYING TO HAVE TO GO OUT OF TOWN TO DO YOUR SHOPPING.
I LIKE THE NAME;
HAMMOND OAKS PLAZA
OAKS PLAZA OF HAMMOND
OH, BY THE WAY , I REALY WISH EVERY ONE WOULD STOP CUTTING THE MALL DOWN WITH YOUR STUPID COMMENTS.IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT ,,,,LEAVE IT ALONE. IF YOU ARE NOT PART OF THE SOLUTION THEN YOU ARE PART OF THE PROBLEM.SHUT UP YOUR COMPLAINTS AND GET OFF YOUR A-- AND HELP MAKE THINGS BETTER. YOU PEOPLE WANT NEW AND IMPROVE,,, THEN YOUR NEGATIVE ATTITUDES MAKE THOSE OF US WITH POSITIVE ATTITUDES DISCOURAGED. MAKE GOOD THE THINGS THAT YOU ARE BLESSED WITH OR , GO SOMEWHERE ELSE.
It should be named after Peter Hammond's "favorite slave boy", buried on East Charles St. next to his famous master. Perhaps this unfortunate's name could actually be spoken this time, thus liberating him from the ignominious status given to him by his condescending "dominus".
I dont care what they call it, as long as they have a Chess King...
I think a good name for the new development would be, "Hammond Aire Plaza."
I like Hammond Square Shopping Center. It is plain but why do we need a fancy name? Keep it simple and what people are accustomed to. That is what everyone will call it anyway.
I agree we need a Best Buy here. I am so tired of driving ot Covington or Baton Rouge., Alse we need mroe restaurants. Macaroni Grill and Olive Garden are my favorite. I also agree we need a Victorias Secret for the younger crowd. A Kirkland's CC's, Sam's Club and Dairy Queen would be nice too. I would definately shop more here if these stores were available.
Hammond Square Centre sounds like a more upscale shopping experience.
I suggest the Langyap shopping mall, everyone knows that Langyap means something extra, and what better way to say it than with a newly renovated mall
V. graves

I think the name should be Grand Hammond Mall. It will indeed be grand when it is all finished!
My suggestion would be Great Southern Mall. Or Southern Oaks Mall
I've seen a lot of different names for THE MALL and some are nice but what about numbers for a name, like THE 1255 MALL. cool huh.
Since we are located in the Florida Parish's, my suggestion would be "Louisiana Purchase".
LD
I think mall should be taken off and simply calling it "Hammond Square" It is something the locals already relate to. I'm excited for Penney's to come back, and That Outback and Target are coming. I just hope the new Penney's is like the one in Covington, they have a great selection for all sizes.
I would like to see
Lane Bryant, Bed Bath & Beyond and maybe also a LifeWay.
I would like to spend my money locally than driving to Covington/Mandeveille,Baton Rouge Or New Orleans.
Thank You

The actual name is "The Village at Hammond Square" now. How about "Tangi-Oak Plaza" or "Tangi-Oak Village at Hammond" "Tangi-Oak Square"?
Being that there is a veryyyy old oak tree that has seen alot in its years on the current mall site...why not keep that part of the history and ambience of the new shopping area. Why not name the mall "Century Oaks"? Sort of says it all.
Independence, La.
Name it either Florida Parishes Centre, Hammond Centre, Tangi Centre, or Northshore Center Mall. Add some stores that no other part of the Northshore has like TGI Friday or O'Charley's, Zaxby's, Super Target, Citi Trends, Stein Mart, TJ Maxx, Victoria's Secret, Barnes and Noble or Borders, FYE instead of Sound Shop and Friedman's Jewelry. You all need to expand that mall back towards the movies. I hope you all get one of the premier shopping centers on the Northshore.
Oaks at Hammond Centre
Centre at Hammond Oaks
Oaks at Hammond Crossing
I think a new name should come after fixing the problems at the mall. You need a 4X4 to drive in some parts of the parking lot, the traffic lights and flow definitely need reengineering, and there needs to be more higher-quality stores. Until then, you can call a pig a unicorn if you want to, but it still smells like a pig.
The new name *is* going to come after the problems at the mall are fixed... see the story linked in the post.
I like the name The Hammond Plaza. It's simple and easy to remember. Do not use Oak, Mall, Strawberry, or Square (since it is not longer a square). People are going to call it Hammond Mall anyway.
I agree with The Hammond Plaza.
Hi Hammond!First:I sure am gonna miss staying in hammond since West Monroe lost.Always enjoy all the hospitality hammond has given. Renee?Could you post a site map of project. So readers can get better idea of what to name it. This project could give a boost to down town developement.Even tie the two areas toghter even more. I don't think it will be called mall anymore.Just look at plans at www.stirlingprop.com {click on:new development Mark Anthony /W.M./LA
How about "Northshore West" since we're on the west side of the northshore?
Paying homage to the strawberry and the nearby 12/55 interchange, how about "The Plaza at Strawberry Crossing"? Any name with the word 'oaks' in it is just played out, since those old trees will probably be slashed and burned within the next few years anyway due to development.
How about... let's NOT rebuild the mall. I don't see what's wrong the mall as it is. Several members of the community are launching a campaign to save the mall.
